Portuguese Passport Status & Collection (2026)

Check if your Portuguese passport is ready, book collection, handle postal delivery and resolve IRN or consulate delays. Verified 2026 guidance.

Important note: This guide explains Portuguese processes in simple terms based on official sources. It is not legal or professional advice.

Portuguese passport and passport collection receipt on a table

Quick Answer: As of 27 September 2026, the official IRN passport guidance does not identify a nationwide public website where applicants can enter a passport application number to see production and delivery stages. To check an individual application, contact the office or Portuguese consulate that handled your request, using the receipt from your appointment. If you selected counter collection, confirm the passport has arrived before booking a collection visit through SIGA. Official passport guidance.

This guide covers the Portuguese electronic passport (Passaporte Eletrónico Português, or PEP) after you have applied. Nationality, residence-card and visa applications use separate procedures.

Which number do you need to check your passport?

Before checking the status, identify which reference you actually have:

What you haveWhat it identifiesWhere to use it
Passport application receipt (comprovativo or talão)Your passport request and the selected delivery arrangementQuote its details to the office or consulate that accepted the application
Nationality código de consultaA Portuguese citizenship or nationality applicationThe separate official nationality-status service
SIGA código de marcaçãoA booked appointmentChecking in for that appointment; it is not a passport production status
Postal tracking number, if one was suppliedAn actual shipmentThe carrier named in the delivery information, not SIGA or the nationality portal

If your nationality case is still pending, use our Portuguese citizenship status guide. A completed nationality case does not mean a passport has been issued. You must apply for that separately.

How to find out whether your passport is ready

Your application receipt is the starting point. The published processing estimate cannot tell you whether your particular passport has reached its collection counter.

  1. Find your original application receipt. Identify the date, service type (normal, express or urgent), the office where you applied and your chosen collection or postal-delivery method. A payment receipt alone may not show every delivery detail; if yours does not, ask the issuing office to confirm the recorded option.
  2. Contact the service that accepted your request. For applications made at an IRN counter or Loja de Cidadão, find that location’s telephone or email in the IRN’s official counter contact directory. For consular applications, contact the particular Portuguese consulate, not a visa agency or an unrelated IRN counter. If you cannot identify the counter, start with Linha Registos: +351 211 950 500, on working days 09:00–17:00, and ask which service can locate your passport request.
  3. Ask about the next milestone. I’d ask whether the passport has been issued, where it is now and what, if anything, you need to do next. A passport can be issued without having arrived at its collection point.

For a useful first enquiry, provide your full name as shown on your Citizen Card, the application date and office, your application-receipt reference if available, the service level paid for, and the expected delivery method. If travel is imminent, state the departure date. Do not post full identification numbers or photos of documents in a public forum.

If you’ve lost the receipt, ask the original counter or consulate to find the request using your identity and appointment details. Confirm what evidence you’ll need to collect the passport rather than submitting another application.

When should a Portuguese passport be ready?

Delivery times vary by location and service. The Justiça passport page, updated 28 May 2026, gives these estimates and exceptions:

Where you appliedService and published timingImportant condition
Mainland Portugal, Madeira island, São Miguel or TerceiraNormal: 5 working days (€65); express: 2 working days (€85); urgent: 1 working day (€95)Express must be requested by 17:00; urgent by 11:00
Lisbon Airport same-day urgent collectionSame day, from 17:15 (€100)Application must be accepted by 11:00 and Lisbon Airport must be the selected urgent delivery destination
Porto Santo; Faial, Pico or Santa MariaNormal: 5; express: 3; urgent: 2 working daysIsland-specific logistics extend the faster services
Graciosa, Corvo, São Jorge or FloresNormal: 6; express: 5; urgent: 4 working daysDo not apply mainland timings to these islands
Portuguese consulates in EuropeNormal: 5 working days, collection on day 6; faster services have separate published timingsActual handover or onward mailing must still be confirmed with the consulate
Portuguese consulates in the United StatesNormal service may take 30 daysDo not assume Portugal’s five-working-day domestic period applies
Selected countries served by diplomatic bagNo published normal-service time estimateThe official list includes India, Pakistan and several other destinations; delivery-to-home is unavailable under this category

For normal and express requests, the government generally counts the delivery period from the next working day after the application. The urgent and Lisbon Airport services have their own cut-off rules. An appointment booked before a holiday or just after a service cut-off can therefore produce a different practical collection date from a simple calendar-day calculation.

How to book collection at an IRN counter

SIGA books collection appointments; it cannot confirm that a passport is ready. Wait for confirmation from your collection office before booking. IRN’s booking instructions give this exact path:

  1. Open the official SIGA appointment portal or its sigaApp mobile application.
  2. Select “marcar atendimento”, then the entity “Registo”.
  3. Choose the theme “Cidadão” and the subtheme for passport collection (levantar passaporte).
  4. Select the relevant reason (motivo), the number of people, the collection location, an available time and your contact details.
  5. Keep the email or SMS confirmation and booking code for checking in.

The appointment is free. If online slots are unavailable, use the phone number for that particular counter to ask whether it offers another collection arrangement. The national passport-booking line is +351 210 990 111, Monday to Friday, 09:00–18:00. A same-day queue ticket may be available in sigaApp at some offices, but it is not a guaranteed substitute for a booked collection appointment.

What should you bring to collect the passport?

Bring your valid Portuguese Citizen Card (Cartão de Cidadão) or Bilhete de Identidade, your application receipt and the appointment confirmation. If the counter requested your previous passport or another document in your individual case, take that too.

If someone else needs to collect your passport, check your office’s authorization procedure first. Madeira’s regional government expressly allows third-party collection when the holder signs the authorization on the original receipt and the collector presents that receipt and their own identification. That is documented regional guidance, not proof that every Portuguese consulate accepts the same arrangement. For a child, check whose signature and identification the issuing office requires. Madeira’s official collection FAQ.

Before leaving the counter, check the name, date of birth, photograph, expiry date and condition of the booklet. Report any discrepancy while you are still there.

Collecting an urgent passport at Lisbon Airport

Check your application receipt before travelling to the airport. Lisbon Airport must be the chosen delivery point for your urgent passport; paying for urgent service alone does not send it there.

The IRN Lisbon Airport passport office publishes these contact and visit details:

DetailIRN-published information
LocationLisbon Airport, departures area, 1700-008 Lisboa
Direct telephone+351 910 678 084
Emaillojaahd.agendamentos@irn.mj.pt (for urgent passport application appointments, not general status enquiries)
Weekdays08:00–19:00
Saturdays08:00–16:00
Public holidays08:00–14:00, except 25 December and 1 January
SundaysClosed

IRN sends urgent passports left uncollected at Lisbon Airport for three working days back to the original application counter. If you missed collection, phone the airport office before travelling there again. An IRN location notice mentions handover after 17:00, while its main passport page specifies 17:15 for the same-day product; use the later time for planning and confirm the precise arrangement with the office if your flight is close.

Selected delivery to your home but nothing arrived?

Home delivery must be selected when you apply, and availability depends on the service and destination. In mainland Portugal the published delivery supplement is €10; overseas availability and charges vary, and some diplomatic-bag destinations have no home-delivery option. Justiça’s official delivery terms.

If the expected issue date has passed, ask the issuing office whether the passport has been dispatched and to which address. If it has, request the dispatch date and any carrier or tracking reference. Confirm which carrier issued the reference before using it on a tracking website.

If the carrier reports a failed delivery or return, ask the issuing office where the passport is being held and whether it can be redelivered or must be collected. Do not apply Citizen Card PIN-letter or residence-permit CTT instructions to a Portuguese passport: those are separate document workflows.

If you’ve moved since applying, contact the original issuing office promptly with your new address and application details. Whether the destination can still be changed depends on the stage and the service’s available procedure; don’t assume updating the address on your Citizen Card will automatically redirect an existing shipment.

Applied through a Portuguese consulate abroad?

Your consulate sets its own handover and onward-postage arrangements. National printing estimates cannot tell you when that particular office will make your passport available.

Start with the consulate’s original instructions and application receipt. In your enquiry, state whether you chose collection or postage, whether you have received a ready-for-collection message or shipment information, and whether your registered address and email are still correct. If your local consulate only replies through its own consular portal or contact form, use that route rather than a Portuguese domestic collection appointment.

For applications handled in Washington, the Portuguese Embassy FAQ gives an expected home-delivery wait of up to three weeks for passports requested at its Consular Section. For its Presenças Consulares outreach events in Chicago, Houston and Miami, it warns that passports and Citizen Cards can take eight to ten weeks. These are Washington’s published estimates, not universal timings for every Portuguese consulate in the United States.

If delivery fails and the passport is returned to the Washington embassy, its Consular Section says it won’t send the document again. You must collect it in person, without an appointment.

If delivery cannot be confirmed and the passport hasn’t returned to the Washington embassy within 30 days of dispatch, its Consular Section says the document will be declared lost and cancelled. You would then need a new application and must pay the applicable fee. Contact the embassy promptly if your shipment is missing to establish whether it is still in transit, has been returned or is at risk of cancellation. These are Washington-specific rules; confirm the procedure with your own consulate if you applied elsewhere.

If you have recently acquired Portuguese nationality but have no Portuguese Citizen Card or Identity Card, obtain one before applying for your first passport. Do not calculate a passport collection date from the nationality approval date. Justiça’s passport eligibility guidance.

If you already hold an expired Portuguese Citizen Card or Identity Card, the Portuguese Embassy in Washington, D.C. says that, when its conditions for simultaneous issuance are met, an existing holder may use the expired card to request a replacement card and passport in one consular appointment. Check your own consulate’s rules before booking; do not assume this exception is available for a first-ever Citizen Card.

What to do if your passport is delayed and you need to travel

An approaching travel date doesn’t automatically upgrade an ordinary passport request. Contact the office handling your existing application, explain when you need to travel and ask what options are actually available. Do not assume you can transfer the application to an airport counter or submit a replacement while the original document’s whereabouts are unknown.

If you cannot get a clear answer, keep your receipt, dated emails, the office’s replies and proof of your upcoming journey. Ask the issuing counter how to make a formal written enquiry, or use Linha Registos to identify the office responsible. Neither route guarantees faster issuance or delivery. For a trip or foreign visa, plan around having the passport physically in hand, not its estimated completion date.
