Quick Answer: CIPLE is CAPLE’s official A2 Portuguese exam. In 2026 it costs €95 and you pass with an overall result of at least 55%. The exam covers reading and writing, listening and speaking. It can be used as Portuguese-language proof for procedures such as Article 80 permanent residence. For nationality applications under the law in force since 19 May 2026, CIPLE covers the Portuguese-language part. The law also refers to Portuguese culture, history, national symbols and civic knowledge.
If you are searching for the “Portuguese citizenship language test”, “A2 test” or “CIPLE test”, these usually point to the same CAPLE exam: Certificado Inicial de Português Língua Estrangeira.
What is CIPLE A2?
CIPLE is the A2-level examination run through CAPLE, the Centro de Avaliação e Certificação de Português Língua Estrangeira at the University of Lisbon’s Faculty of Letters.
A2 is an elementary level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. CAPLE describes it as the ability to deal with a limited range of predictable everyday situations in Portuguese.
That means the exam is built around practical language rather than academic Portuguese. The official description includes tasks such as understanding notices and timetables, filling in forms, dealing with accommodation, ordering food, asking for directions, handling basic bank or post-office interactions and talking about personal information.
You do not need to complete a CAPLE A1 exam first. You can register directly for CIPLE if your Portuguese is already at A2 level.
When do you actually need CIPLE in Portugal?
CIPLE is one way of proving basic Portuguese. Whether you need this specific exam depends on the procedure.
Article 80 permanent residence
For the standard non-EU Article 80 permanent residence route, AIMA asks for proof of basic Portuguese after five years of temporary residence.
AIMA’s current list accepts several forms of proof, including a certificate obtained through a CAPLE language test. It also accepts other recognised education or course certificates, including an A2-or-higher Português Língua de Acolhimento certificate.
If permanent residence is your goal, see the separate Article 80 permanent residence guide for the rest of the AIMA file. CIPLE only deals with the language part.
What if you reach five years without A2?
Five years is an eligibility threshold, not an automatic conversion from temporary to permanent residence. AIMA’s Article 80 requirements include both at least five years of temporary residence and proof of basic Portuguese.
If year five arrives before you have an accepted language certificate, that does not by itself end your residence on the five-year anniversary. It means you are not yet in a position to satisfy the Article 80 language requirement. Temporary residence and its renewal are a separate route; you can apply for permanent residence later once you meet the Article 80 conditions.
Portuguese citizenship
CAPLE’s current FAQ still states that CIPLE A2 is the minimum CAPLE exam level used for Portuguese nationality.
On 19 May 2026, Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026 changed Article 6 of the Nationality Law. For standard naturalisation, Article 6 now refers to sufficient knowledge of Portuguese, Portuguese culture, history and national symbols. It also refers to fundamental rights and duties and the political organisation of the Portuguese state.
CIPLE’s published exam format still tests language. It does not contain a separate Portuguese-history or civics component.
So for a new nationality application in 2026, the safe distinction is:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does CIPLE prove A2 Portuguese? | Yes. |
| Does CAPLE still identify CIPLE A2 as the minimum language exam level for nationality? | Yes. |
| Does the current CIPLE exam itself test the new culture, history, symbols and civic requirements added in May 2026? | No. |
| Should you assume a CIPLE certificate alone completes every new nationality knowledge requirement? | No. Check the current IRN filing requirements when you apply. |
This matters especially if you are preparing years in advance. The language certificate is one part of the file, not a substitute for whatever implementation Portugal adopts for the newer knowledge requirements.
For the wider change, use the Portugal citizenship law guide and the separate 7-year and 10-year citizenship residence guide.
If your nationality procedure was already pending when the new law entered into force on 19 May 2026, the transitional rule is different. That issue belongs to the law-change guide rather than the CIPLE exam itself.
CIPLE exam format in 2026
CAPLE groups the CIPLE exam into three components covering four language skills.
| Component | What you do | Time | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading + written production and interaction | Read short notices/texts, answer multiple-choice or matching questions, then write two short texts | 1h15 | 45% |
| Listening | Listen to informal spoken texts from everyday public, work or education situations and answer multiple-choice questions | 30 min | 30% |
| Speaking | Personal interaction, a simulated everyday situation and discussion of a current-events topic | 15 min per pair | 25% |
The speaking test is conducted with two candidates at the same time whenever possible.
For national CIPLE sessions in Portugal, CAPLE currently lists reading/writing at 09:00 and listening at 10:30. The speaking time is assigned by the exam centre.
If you are travelling, working around childcare or booking a return train, keep the rest of the day flexible. Recent candidates describe speaking slots several hours after the listening paper. CAPLE does not publish one universal oral-exam time, so the schedule sent by your LAPE is the one that matters.
Special exam conditions: disability or age 60+
CAPLE can adapt examination conditions where a candidate has a justified special need. This is not a general exemption from the written exam for everyone over 60.
CAPLE says an oral-only CIPLE route can apply when a visual or motor disability prevents a candidate from completing the written components. It can also apply to people aged 60 or over who cannot read or write, including in their own language. Contact the LAPE before registering and provide the supporting documents it requests so CAPLE and the centre can confirm what accommodation is available.
What score do you need to pass CIPLE?
The pass threshold is 55% overall.
CAPLE’s final classifications are:
- Suficiente: 55% to 69%
- Bom: 70% to 84%
- Muito Bom: 85% to 100%
The published CIPLE structure gives each component a percentage weight toward the final result. CAPLE does not state on the CIPLE page that you must score 55% separately in every component.
Missing a component is different from doing badly in one. CAPLE’s exam rules say that absence from a required component can invalidate the exam, subject to the limited justified-absence rules explained later in this guide.
CIPLE exam dates in Portugal for 2026
Portugal has more CIPLE dates than the international calendar.
The 2026 schedule includes national CIPLE-P sessions as well as international CAPLE sessions. Treat the central CAPLE calendar and your chosen LAPE’s availability as two separate checks: each LAPE decides which examinations it runs in each period and how many places it opens. A date can therefore exist on the national calendar without being offered by your preferred centre at all.
| 2026 CIPLE session | Exam date | Registration deadline |
|---|---|---|
| CIPLE-P February | 7 February | 26 January |
| CIPLE-P March | 14 March | 2 March |
| CIPLE-P April | 18 April | 6 April |
| International May | 14 May | 27 April |
| CIPLE-P June | 20 June | 5 June |
| International July | 16 July | 30 June |
| CIPLE-P September | 19 September | 7 September |
| CIPLE-P October | 17 October | 5 October |
| International November | 5 November | 20 October |
As of 22 September 2026, the remaining published 2026 dates are therefore the October CIPLE-P session and the November international session, subject to a LAPE still showing an available place.
CAPLE says registrations can generally be made until 21 days before the first exam in the relevant session. In practice, the booking system only shows the places a LAPE has actually made available.
Do not wait for the deadline if your preferred centre is important to you. The deadline is the last registration date, not a promise that seats will remain open until then.
A blank registration search can mean two different things. If the exam period itself is not listed for that LAPE, that is not the same as a sold-out seat. Check another centre or ask the LAPE whether it plans to open that period. If the LAPE does offer the period but no place is currently visible, availability can still change. In 2026, candidates reported seeing additional Portuguese places appear after earlier searches showed nothing available.
If CIPLE A2 is full, can you take the B1 exam instead?
If your Portuguese is genuinely above A2, DEPLE B1 can be worth considering rather than waiting only for a CIPLE place.
CAPLE describes CIPLE A2 as the minimum CAPLE level used for nationality and also states that you may register directly for any CAPLE level without first taking the lower exams. DEPLE corresponds to B1 and costs €115 in 2026.
This is not a shortcut for an A2 learner. The B1 exam is longer and more demanding. Consider it only if your actual Portuguese is already around B1 and the timing advantage matters to you.
How to register for CIPLE
Registration and payment are completed online through CAPLE.
The practical sequence is:
- Open CAPLE’s CIPLE page and choose Inscrever-se no exame.
- Select CIPLE and the exam session you want.
- Choose an available LAPE, which is CAPLE’s term for an authorised exam centre.
- Complete every required field in the registration form.
- Pay using the method shown by CAPLE.
- Keep the registration email, payment receipt and candidate details.
CAPLE does not allow registration for more than one exam in the same examination period (época). In practice, do not plan on holding multiple CAPLE exam registrations as backups within the same period.
CAPLE says payment can be made by Multibanco for candidates in Portugal or by credit card.
The 2026 CIPLE exam fee is €95.
The fee is for the exam. A private preparation course, tutor or language-school package is separate and is not required by CAPLE.
What if your preferred city does not appear?
Only available places are displayed in the registration process.
A LAPE decides:
- which CAPLE sessions it offers;
- which exam levels it runs;
- how many candidates it can accept.
If Lisbon or another preferred location is unavailable, check other LAPEs rather than assuming the entire exam session is full.
CIPLE can also be taken at authorised centres outside Portugal during international sessions.
What to bring on CIPLE exam day
Bring the original identity document you used for registration. CAPLE’s rules list a Citizen Card, passport or residence permit as accepted registration-ID types.
Arrive at least 20 minutes before the scheduled start unless your LAPE tells you to arrive earlier.
For the written component, use a blue or black pen on the official answer sheets. CAPLE allows pencil and eraser for the reading and listening components.
Do not bring study material into the exam itself. CAPLE prohibits the use of:
- mobile phones and other personal electronic devices;
- dictionaries;
- books or personal notebooks;
- correction fluid or correction tape.
The oral component is video-recorded.
Late arrival can invalidate part of the exam
CAPLE’s rules are strict here.
If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for the reading/writing component, you cannot take it. If you are not present when the listening component starts, you cannot take that component.
For the oral component, a justified late arrival or absence can be handled differently. CAPLE allows the candidate to ask the LAPE for a new oral time where the delay or absence is properly justified.
Use the official CIPLE A2 test examples before paying for prep
The best first diagnostic is free.
CAPLE publishes official CIPLE example material on the CIPLE page under Exemplo do Exame, including reading/writing material, listening material and an answer key.
Use that before deciding whether you need a course.
A useful self-check is:
- Sit the reading and listening material under exam conditions without a dictionary.
- Write the required texts without translation software.
- Record yourself answering simple personal questions and handling an everyday role-play.
- Repeat the speaking exercise with another person, because the real oral exam is normally paired.
- Review whether your problem is vocabulary, grammar, listening speed, writing under time pressure or spoken interaction.
Do not judge readiness only from an app streak or a course level label. The official sample shows you the task type CAPLE itself expects.
Give the listening section more preparation than the sample suggests
Recent 2026 candidate reports most often single out the listening component as the hardest part, including reports from people who felt comfortable with the official sample. Reports mention faster processing demands, longer answer choices and room acoustics or background noise making concentration harder.
That is candidate experience, not an official CAPLE change notice. The practical lesson is to use the official sample to learn the task structure, but do not make it your only listening practice. Add natural-speed European Portuguese from radio, podcasts, interviews and everyday conversations so unfamiliar voices and less-than-perfect audio do not become the first time you face that difficulty.
A weak listening result does not automatically mean failure if your weighted final result still reaches 55%.
CIPLE or a PLA A2 course?
CIPLE is not the only route to basic-Portuguese proof for every residence procedure.
For Article 80 permanent residence, AIMA explicitly accepts an A2-or-higher Português Língua de Acolhimento (PLA) certificate as an alternative form of language proof.
| CIPLE | PLA A2+ |
|---|---|
| One CAPLE exam | Course-based route |
| €95 exam fee in 2026 | Cost depends on provider and funding |
| Fixed exam sessions | Course timetable depends on provider |
| You may prepare independently | You attend the required learning programme |
| Pass by reaching the CIPLE score threshold | Obtain the recognised course certification |
| Useful if you already speak near A2 and want a direct test route | Useful if you prefer structured learning rather than one exam |
Do not assume that any private language-school completion document is automatically equivalent to CIPLE or a recognised PLA certificate.
Before paying, ask who will issue the final certificate, what exact level it will show and under which recognised PLA route it is issued. For Article 80, AIMA identifies recognised PLA evidence by the issuing network, including public schools, IEFP direct or participated training centres and Centros Qualifica. A marketing page that simply promises an “A2 certificate for citizenship” is not enough.
Recent 2026 community discussions include applicants who spent substantial amounts on private programmes and later questioned whether the promised certificate was issued through a recognised route.
For nationality applications submitted under the post-19 May 2026 law, the same warning applies to both routes: language proof does not by itself answer the newer culture and civic-knowledge requirements.
When do CIPLE results come out?
CAPLE publishes results online. You check them using your candidate code.
Keep the Confirmação de inscrição email you received when registering. Recent candidates report that it includes the planned result-publication date for their booking, and result timing can differ between LAPEs even when people sat CIPLE in the same general exam period. Use your own registration information rather than assuming everybody receives results on the same day.
Your result shows the overall qualitative classification and the partial percentages for the language activities.
The result page may therefore show:
- Insuficiente;
- Suficiente;
- Bom;
- Muito Bom.
If you pass A2, CAPLE issues a certificate. CAPLE uses the term diploma for B1 and higher levels.
How long until the physical CIPLE certificate is ready?
CAPLE’s current pages give slightly different operational wording.
Its FAQ says successful candidates can collect the certificate at the LAPE 15 to 20 business days after results are published. The formal exam rules say certificates are sent to the LAPE about 21 business days after publication of the final results.
For planning, treat that as roughly three to four working weeks after the result publication, then confirm collection with the LAPE where you sat the exam.
If someone else needs to collect it for you, CAPLE allows an authorised representative with written permission from the certificate holder.
What if you need the certificate urgently?
CAPLE lists an urgent certificate issuance service for €30 in 2026 after results have been published and before the normal certificate-delivery date.
It also lists:
- second copy: €25;
- direct certificate delivery to the candidate: €25;
- in-person delivery at CAPLE: €25;
- exam re-evaluation: €25.
The €25 direct-delivery service is a CAPLE service after the normal certificate-delivery date. Do not assume your individual LAPE will automatically mail the certificate to you: collection and local postal arrangements can differ by centre.
CAPLE’s rules say the second-copy procedure for a lost certificate is only available during the two years after the exam. Scan the certificate when you receive it and keep that scan separately from the original.
If an AIMA or IRN deadline is driving the request, contact your LAPE before assuming a screenshot of the online result will replace the certificate the receiving authority asks for.
What if you fail or think the result is wrong?
You can take CIPLE again in a later available session.
If you want the result checked, CAPLE allows a request for re-evaluation within five business days after the results are published. You can request it through your LAPE or email CAPLE directly at caple@letras.ulisboa.pt.
CAPLE states that the response is communicated within 25 business days after publication of the results. The €25 re-evaluation fee is not refunded simply because the classification remains unchanged.
The re-evaluation is internal and all exam components are graded again by another evaluation team, not only the section you disagree with. CAPLE does not send the exam papers to candidates and does not provide detailed performance commentary.
What if you miss the exam or want to change the date?
Do not treat a paid CIPLE booking as a flexible reservation.
CAPLE states that the exam fee is not refunded for withdrawal or non-attendance.
There is, however, a narrow transfer rule for a candidate who misses all components for reasons not attributable to them. In that case, the candidate can request transfer to the next exam session at the same LAPE within five business days, with a written request and evidence of the reason. CAPLE says this transfer can happen only once.
A justified problem affecting only the oral component may be handled separately by the LAPE under the oral rescheduling rule.
If you simply chose the wrong date, contact the LAPE immediately rather than booking around an assumption that CAPLE will move the registration.
After you pass CIPLE
Keep three things together:
- the physical certificate;
- a high-quality scan;
- your candidate code and exam date.
Then use the certificate for the procedure that actually requires it.
For Article 80 permanent residence, add it to the wider AIMA document file rather than treating the CIPLE result as the application itself.
For citizenship, check the current nationality requirements at the time you file. In 2026, that distinction matters because the Nationality Law now asks for more than language knowledge alone.
If you are working toward residence-based citizenship, the citizenship residence requirement guide explains when the 7-year or 10-year clock applies. If year five is approaching first, the Article 80 permanent residence guide covers the separate AIMA route.
