Quick Answer: Revolut offers eligible Portugal residents a Portuguese IBAN beginning PT50. Its published PT-IBAN requirements do not set a minimum salary, minimum account balance or required profession. Your registered residence needs to be Portugal, and you must complete any verification Revolut requests before the account is opened or migrated to its Portuguese branch.
This guide is for personal accounts.
Revolut Portuguese IBAN requirements
The requirement people most often overthink is income. Revolut may ask what you do for work or where money comes from, but that is not the same thing as setting a salary threshold for a PT IBAN.
| Question | Current position for a personal PT IBAN |
|---|---|
| Must I live in Portugal? | Portugal must be your registered country of residence for the Portuguese branch migration. |
| Do I need a job? | Revolut does not publish employment as a condition for receiving the PT IBAN. |
| Is there a minimum salary? | No minimum salary is stated in Revolut’s published Portuguese migration criteria. |
| Do I need a particular profession? | No. Revolut may ask for your occupation or employer as part of verification. |
| Do I need a NIF? | Revolut requires tax-residence information and the tax numbers relevant to you. A Portuguese NIF alone does not qualify you for a PT IBAN. |
| Is there a minimum balance? | Revolut does not state a minimum account balance as a condition for Portuguese branch migration. |
For a first personal account, expect to provide a valid mobile number and email address, your name, date of birth, current address and citizenship details, an accepted government-issued identity document, a selfie and tax-residence information. You must be at least 18 and legally resident in a supported country.
Use the identity-document options shown in your own application. Don’t assume that every passport, residence application receipt or temporary immigration document is accepted just because another customer used it successfully.
Why does Revolut ask about your profession or income?
Occupation, employer and source-of-funds questions are part of financial verification. Answer with your real status if you’re employed, self-employed, retired, studying or currently unemployed.
If Revolut asks for supporting evidence, use documents that explain the money actually entering the account. That might be payslips for salary, invoices or contracts for freelance work, pension evidence, a sale agreement or another document linked to the funds under review.
There is an important distinction here: being asked to explain income is not the same as having to earn a minimum amount to qualify for the PT IBAN.
Portuguese visa income rules are also separate. Meeting Revolut’s checks does not prove that you meet the means-of-subsistence requirement for a D7, D8 or another residence route.
Can you get a PT IBAN before moving to Portugal?
Not simply by obtaining a Portuguese NIF. Revolut’s Portuguese migration guidance says your country of residence must be Portugal.
That makes the PT IBAN different from opening a general Revolut account while living in another supported country. If your registered residence is still abroad, don’t assume you can select Portugal just because you are preparing a move or already have a NIF.
This is one reason the PT IBAN should not be treated as a guaranteed pre-arrival banking solution. If you need an account before moving, compare the options in the Portuguese bank account guide instead of changing your Revolut residence details prematurely.
Is a Revolut PT50 account really a Portuguese bank account?
For a Portugal resident who has been moved to the local branch, the PT IBAN is attached to Revolut Bank UAB - Sucursal em Portugal. Revolut’s Portuguese legal documents identify that branch as registered with Banco de Portugal.
That matters because the change is more than a cosmetic replacement of LT with PT. You become a customer of the Portuguese branch for the account covered by those terms, and your local EUR account is identified with a Portuguese IBAN.
The deposit-protection detail is less obvious. Revolut states that eligible deposits held with Revolut Bank UAB are covered by the Lithuanian deposit insurance scheme, generally up to €100,000 per depositor across covered deposits with Revolut Bank UAB, subject to the scheme’s rules and exclusions. A Portuguese IBAN therefore does not mean the deposit guarantee itself moves to Portugal’s domestic scheme.
If you are holding a large balance, read the current deposit-insurance document in the official sources rather than relying on the IBAN country code to infer how protection works.
Migrating an existing Revolut account to PT50
Revolut allows one personal account per person, so existing customers are migrated rather than opening a second personal account just for Portugal.
For an existing account:
- Check that Portugal is correctly recorded as your residence and review your personal details.
- Follow the migration prompt or notification and complete any extra identity, address, occupation, employer or nationality checks requested.
- Read and accept the Portuguese branch terms.
- After migration, open Home → Accounts → EUR → Details and copy the new PT account details.
For a joint account, both holders must complete the required migration steps. If one holder has not moved to the same branch, the joint account cannot simply migrate for one person only.
Revolut does not publish a fixed migration time. If the app is waiting for information or a document review, the branch move can remain incomplete until that check is resolved.
The migration changes the branch and local account details rather than creating a second personal account. Revolut says normal account functionality generally remains the same after a branch migration, although local branch terms or product-specific conditions can differ.
What happens to the old Lithuanian IBAN?
After migration, the new PT IBAN becomes the primary account identifier and the one you should give out for new transfers.
Revolut says the previous IBAN can remain active in the background for existing direct debits and recurring payments so they are not immediately broken. That does not make it a second general-purpose account number to keep distributing after the migration.
For payroll, a new landlord, a utility provider or anyone sending a fresh transfer, use the PT details.
I’d test the PT IBAN with one small incoming transfer before redirecting a large balance or an important salary payment. It is a simple way to catch a copied digit or an outdated beneficiary record before the amount matters.
Which Revolut account details should you use after migration?
For normal euro transfers within the EEA, use the local EUR PT IBAN shown in your account details.
Revolut also provides separate transfer details for other situations. Portugal-based customers can have local GBP details and SWIFT details for supported international transfers. The fact that your EUR account starts with PT50 does not mean every incoming currency should be sent to that EUR IBAN without checking the transfer instructions.
Open the relevant currency inside Revolut and use the details displayed for that currency and transfer type. This matters most when someone is sending money from outside the EEA or sending a non-euro currency.
Proof of account and Portuguese bank statements
Revolut gives you two different documents that are easy to confuse: account confirmation and an account statement.
| If you need to show… | Use this |
|---|---|
| Your name and IBAN | Account confirmation |
| That the PT account belongs to you | Account confirmation |
| Transactions over a specific period | EUR account statement |
| Salary or pension credits arriving in the account | EUR account statement plus the matching income evidence |
| A particular transfer or card transaction | Download the individual transaction confirmation from that transaction |
Download account confirmation through Profile → Documents & statements → Personal → Account confirmation.
For an account statement, go to Home → Accounts → EUR → More (…) → Statement, choose the date range, select PDF and generate the document. Before sending it anywhere, check that the name, address, IBAN and requested transaction period are visible.
How to get a Revolut statement in Portuguese
Changing the app or device language does not change a document that has already been generated. Revolut says newly generated documents can take some time to reflect a language change.
On iPhone, its guidance points to Settings → Apps → Revolut → Language. On Android, Revolut currently directs users to change the device language and reopen the app. Set Portuguese, generate a fresh document and inspect the PDF before using it.
A Portuguese-language statement and a statement showing a Portuguese IBAN are two separate things. An office may care about one, both or neither depending on what it asked you to prove.
Can Revolut stamp a personal statement?
Revolut’s personal-account guidance says it does not issue hard-copy documents or add stamps to requested personal account documents. Statements and confirmation documents are generated electronically.
That is a real limitation if an office or other recipient explicitly insists on a physically stamped bank document. In that situation, don’t assume printing the PDF yourself creates an equivalent. Ask the recipient what electronic alternative it accepts.
Will AIMA accept a Revolut Portugal statement?
A PT50 IBAN does not create a blanket rule that every Revolut statement must be accepted for every AIMA procedure. The useful question is whether the PDF proves the specific financial fact AIMA asked you to prove.
For example, if your appointment or document request asks for evidence of income and account activity, a clean package can include:
- the EUR statement covering the requested period;
- account confirmation where ownership of the IBAN needs to be clear;
- payslips, pension evidence, invoices or other income records relevant to your route;
- statements from another account if the original income lands there before you transfer money to Revolut.
A transfer from one of your own accounts to another proves that money moved. It does not, by itself, prove where that money originally came from.
The safer approach is not to argue about the bank brand. Build the evidence around the wording in your own AIMA request and make the source of funds traceable.
One thing I would avoid is turning up with only screenshots from the app. Generate the PDF documents, check the date range and make sure the holder details are readable before the appointment.
If your AIMA instructions specifically require a stamp or another form Revolut cannot produce, confirm an acceptable substitute before relying on the PDF alone.
Consular visa applications and AIMA residence appointments are different stages. If the banking evidence is for a particular route, read it alongside the current D7 visa guide or D8 digital nomad visa guide.
Salary, direct debits and utility bills
Revolut specifically lists salary receipt and direct debits among the reasons for giving Portugal residents a local IBAN.
For salary, send payroll the PT EUR details and account confirmation if the employer asks for proof that the account belongs to you. Do this before the employer’s payroll cut-off rather than on the day salary is due.
For a new SEPA direct debit, give the supplier the current EUR account details and complete whatever mandate the supplier requires. Revolut does not create the supplier’s mandate for you.
After migration, don’t assume every company holding your old IBAN will update automatically. Existing recurring arrangements may continue in the background, but new mandates and future account changes should use PT50.
MB WAY and Multibanco references
A PT IBAN solves only part of the Portugal-banking problem. The other part is access to MB WAY and MULTIBANCO reference payments, which are used heavily for bills, online purchases and public-service payments.
Revolut’s Portugal support pages say it can issue an MB digital card for these functions. Through Revolut you can use Multibanco reference payments and MB WAY features such as sending or requesting money, QR payments and cardless cash withdrawal where supported.
You can also generate the virtual MB card and link it to the separate MB WAY app if the option is available on your account.
For a bill that shows Entidade, Referência and Montante, use the Multibanco reference-payment function and enter all three values exactly. Save the payment confirmation, especially for a government fee or deadline-sensitive bill.
Does the physical Revolut card become a Multibanco card?
No. Your normal physical Revolut card remains a Visa or Mastercard. The Portuguese branch and PT IBAN do not turn that plastic card into a physical card issued on the Multibanco network.
This distinction matters at the occasional Portuguese merchant whose payment terminal accepts only Multibanco-network cards. The digital MB functions can exist in the app while the physical Revolut card still uses its international card network.
The MB WAY and Multibanco guide explains the payment methods in more detail.
Finanças, tax refunds and state payments
For an IRS refund or another payment from the Portuguese Tax Authority, the important step is not simply owning a PT IBAN. The IBAN must be registered and confirmed against your tax record.
In Portal das Finanças, use Alterar o IBAN to update the bank details attached to your NIF. AT says the status becomes valid after the bank ownership check is completed, so look for the confirmation status rather than assuming the change was accepted immediately. The Portal das Finanças guide covers access to the portal.
For outgoing tax payments, follow the payment method shown on the specific AT notice or portal page. Revolut supports Multibanco bill and tax-payment functions in Portugal, but don’t force one payment format into another.
A Pagamentos ao Estado reference is not the same as an ordinary service-payment reference. If the Revolut screen does not offer the payment type printed on the notice, use another AT-listed method before the deadline instead of inventing an entity number.
The same caution applies to AIMA fees and other public bodies. Use the method printed on the actual payment notice you received.
Can Revolut be your only bank account in Portugal?
For many everyday uses, the Portuguese branch closes most of the gaps that used to push residents toward a second local account. A PT IBAN can receive salary, support SEPA direct debits, work with local EUR transfers, provide MB WAY access and handle Multibanco reference payments.
The remaining differences are practical rather than cosmetic.
Where Revolut still differs from a traditional branch bank
Cash deposits: Revolut’s Portugal help centre says cash deposits are not currently available. If you regularly receive cash that needs to go into a bank account, that alone can justify keeping another option.
Stamped or paper documents: personal statements and account confirmations are electronic. If you repeatedly deal with an institution that insists on a branch stamp, Revolut cannot give you the same counter-service workflow as a traditional bank.
In-person problem solving: there is no normal retail branch relationship where you walk in, take a ticket and ask a clerk to print or certify a document. Support is built around the app.
A second Portuguese account only earns its keep if you actually need cash deposits, branch service, stamped paperwork or another product that depends on a traditional-bank relationship.
If your PT IBAN is not showing
Start with the migration requirements rather than reinstalling the app repeatedly.
- Check the country of residence shown in your Revolut profile. It needs to be Portugal for the Portuguese branch route.
- Look for an outstanding verification request for identity, address, occupation, employer or nationality details.
- If you use a joint account, check whether the other holder has completed the same branch migration requirements.
- Open Accounts → EUR → Details and verify the actual account information shown there instead of relying on an old screenshot or saved beneficiary.
- If migration appears complete but the expected details are still missing, contact Revolut support from the app and ask which branch your account is currently registered with.
If your old IBAN still appears in a historic direct debit, that does not necessarily mean the migration failed. Revolut keeps the old identifier operating in the background for certain existing recurring payments after the PT IBAN becomes primary.
